What is SEO (Search Engine Optimization)?

You hear the term SEO thrown around in the internet world.  Some people claim to know SEO some people think they know what SEO is.  Is it an art, Is it black magic, is there a little SEO button that can magically get you ranked atop the search engines.

First, what does SEO mean.  Search engine optimization is the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine’s “natural” or un-paid (“organic”) search results. In general, the earlier (or higher ranked on the search results page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine’s users. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, video search, academic search, news search and industry-specific vertical search engines.

With that being said how can someone affect the search engines.  How can someone know what to do to get pages ranked for certain keywords.  There are lots of people claiming they know the ART of SEO when they are just snake charmers telling you they can get you ranked for $100.

SEO is a long and tedious process that takes time and lots of effort to do so.  You need to do research on the website you are going to be SEOing and be up-to-date on all the SEO rules.  If you do not follow these rules you can be banned from the search engines.

There are 3 types of SEOers.  The White Hat -The good guys, The Black Hat -The Bad Guys and the Grey Hat – They do not know if they should be bad or good.

White Hat SEO

In search engine optimization (SEO) world,  The White Hat SEO are the ones that use optimization strategies, techniques and tactics that focus on a human audience opposed to search engines and completely follows search engine rules and policies.  When focused on the consumer and not how to “trick” the search engines you should be ok.

Black Hat SEO

Black Hat SEO in the SEO world refers to the use of aggressive optimization strategies, techniques and tactics that focus only on search engines and not a human audience, and usually does not obey search engines rules.  They try to use short cuts and things that search engines do not like you to do such as keyword stuffing, paying for links, and creating pages just for the search engines not the consumer

Grey Hat SEO

Grey Hat SEO is someone in the SEO world that follows the search engine rules but skates that fine line between good and evil.   They may be doing something wrong but are not really over the top yet.

SO when looking for SEO for your website be careful and do your research before spending money.  Sometimes spending a little more is better.  As the old saying goes you get what you pay for, the same applies here, make sure you are getting white hat SEO and not a snake charmer.
